Family in Need

Brothers:

This email was sent to me and presented at our lodge about a child and family in need. They are part of our community and if you are able to help please do so.

----
Kai Dutton, a kindergarten student at Mt Pleasant Academy, has been diagnosed with a sudden aggressive cancer that invaded various parts of his body – the stomach area, spine and lungs. The removal of the tumor near the spine has caused him not to be able to use his legs. He has completed one round of Chemo and will return in mid October for a 2nd round. The tumors are too big to be removed surgically. He is now home after 18 days in MUSC. He is in a hospital bed and his parents are providing the almost constant care that is required. Kai’s sister, Kira Luban-Dutton, is a 5th grader at MPA.

Kai’s father is self employed and is unable to work during this difficult time. This family has never had to ask for help before, but friends have persuaded them to seek the help of our MPA family and community. Their financial situation has become dire. The MPA PTA has established a special account so that we can accept financial donations for the Kai Dutton Fund. The family will be so appreciative for any amount you could contribute. Please make checks payable to the Kia Dutton Fund and send them to the Mount Pleasant Academy school.

It would be great if you would forward this urgent request to others on your personal email list and ask them to mail contributions to Mt Pleasant Academy, 605 Center Street, Mt Pleasant SC 29464.

An immediate need is a recliner so that the father is able to sleep more comfortably beside Kai’s bed. The condition of the chair is not important. If you have one, we can make arrangements to pick it up and take it to them. Other items needed include:

Huggies Velcro Pull-ups, size 3T -4T
Diaper wipes
Disposable waterproof under pads (not the breathable kind) “chucks”
Band aids
Paper towels
Kleenex
Disposable gloves, XLarge
Hand Sanitizer
Saran Wrap

Please do not contact the family directly. You can email Shelley Howe at helpforkai@gmail.com to inquire if certain items are needed or have been received. The family does not have space to store these items, so please bring them to school or to the home of Shelley and Waring Howe, 118 Friend Street, Mt Pleasant.

One of the things that makes our school so successful is the closeness of our school community. I know that we can count on you to help this MPA family as they deal with this tragic situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with little Kai.

Jane Davis, Principal, Mount Pleasant Academy.
